Knee is called as complex joint, because of the number of structures it has around, like it is made up of 3 bones. Thigh bone, shin bone of the leg bone, and knee cap. Large number of ligaments from sides, inside and around. There is a cartilage, capsule, muscles , tendons, fat and fibrous tissue. The list is long.
But according to me its a very simple joint which needs movement. I believe its complexly designed to make movement simple and give at-most ease the movement.
One cannot absolutely work on one single joint and expect a pain free movement in that joint. Similarly your knees are closely related to the pains and discomforts in the lower joints like ankle and feet.
